Druk Wangyel Run Team Marathon

Druk Wangyel Run

The Druk Wangyel Run is an annual marathon event that challenges participants with a 21-kilometer (half marathon) course featuring steep inclines, high-altitude terrain, and breathtaking scenery. This year’s theme, “Test Your Limit,”embodies the spirit of endurance and determination required to complete the race.

The run begins at Lungtenzampa Track and Field Stadium and finishes at Dochula Pass, which sits at an elevation of approximately 3,100 meters (10,171 feet). Renowned for its panoramic views of the Himalayas and the iconic 108 memorial chortens (stupas), Dochula provides a culturally and spiritually enriching backdrop for the event. These chortens were built in honor of the soldiers who lost their lives during a military operation in 2003.

Beyond testing athletic limits, the primary objective of the Druk Wangyel Run is to promote physical fitness, a healthy lifestyle, and environmental conservation. As runners make their way through Bhutan’s pristine landscapes, the event serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting nature.

The race welcomes a diverse group of participants, from local Bhutanese who take pride in their national heritage and community spirit to international runners eager to experience Bhutan’s unique culture, stunning natural beauty and travel experience . While the event primarily features a half marathon (21 km), additional race categories—including a full marathon and shorter distances—make it accessible to individuals of varying fitness levels.

Over the years, the Druk Wangyel Run has gained popularity, drawing increasing numbers of participants and international attention. It has become a significant event on Bhutan’s sporting calendar, showcasing the country’s majestic landscapes and rich traditions. Ultimately, the run reflects Bhutan’s holistic approach to development, prioritizing well-being while celebrating its cultural heritage
